CARPE DIEM, #1 waterfall

For starters ... I will give the first prompt for this new daily haiku meme today. So you can think about it and be inspired.
Carpe Diem is a new daily haiku meme in which you can share your haiku. The haiku (or senryu) can be a classical or a non-classical one. It's all up to you. The first prompt for CARPE DIEM is waterfall. I think this is a great prompt to start with. Let flow your inspiration like a waterfall and share your haiku with us.

Please be so kind to share a thought in the comment form. Do you have an idea for a new prompt? Well ... share it with us. I look forward to your contributions for this new haiku meme. And I hope it will be a success. I will try this to the end of the year ... so I hope that I can continue this haiku meme in January 2013.

Have fun, be inspired and enjoy writing ... This prompt will stay on 'till October 2nd, 11.59 AM (CET). The prompt for October 2nd will be storm and will be published October 1st around 10.00 PM (CET)

Namaste,

Chèvrefeuille

  2. This is a great idea, Kris!

By the way, NaHaiWriMo on Facebook (run by Michael Dylan Welch) also runs a daily prompt every month and anybody can just post on their timeline and like or comment on each other's haiku. It's really a great community and I am learning a lot from there as there are many well know haiku poets to guide us such as Allan Summers, Pris Campbell, Johannes Bjerg, etc. Take a look there to get some ideas for your new blog. Here is the link -->> https://www.facebook.com/pages/NaHaiWriMo/108107262587697?sk=wall&filter=12

Good luck on your new venture. Perhaps, some days I may link up.

    1. NaHaiWriMo on Facebook does not like the 5-7-5 format of haiku. Michael Dylan Welch, the owner of NaHaiWriMo, rails against it all the time. He will tolerate 5-7-5 haiku if you post it, but just barely. Just thought you all should know...

    2. Oh, that's why the 5-7-5 sign is striked through! I thought that was strange but never imagined the reason. So, what form does Michael Dylan Welch like? The 3-5-3? Or ... is there actually a rule about the lines? As far as I remember, a haiku is supposed to be 17 "syllables" (or, rather 17 ...I forgot the word), but maybe no rule as to the distribution of those syllables across the lines.

    3. Counting of syllables on the NaHaiWriMo Facebook page seems to be a no-no! Some of the poems posted are just little wisps of words, like stray bits of paper skittering across the street in a breeze!

    4. From what I understand, 5-7-5 with a strike through it is misleading. I am sure there have been many discussions about the interpretation of the sign by many. But if you read the aricle, it says it more clearly. If I am right, Michael Dylan Welch or for that matter NaHaiWriMo is not against 5-7-5 at all, as long as all the aspects of haiku are in the verse. English haiku need not be a strict 5-7-5. 17 syllables is the maximum we can aim to have in English haiku. The lesser the better. I am told that Japanese do not count Japanese syllables but sounds units ( Japanese haiku comes in one line with three segments - first segment has 5 sound units, second segment has 7 sound units and third segment has 5 sound units), which are much smaller than English syllables. Hence it is believed that, what we convey in 17 English syllables is much more than what 17 sound units in Japanese can. So by keeping our English haiku much less than 17 syllables, we could potentially be conveying the same amount of matter through a Japanese haiku. This is my humble understanding. Haiku is not just about a 5-7-5 structure but also the season word and the two images being superimposed. Should you wish to read more, please follow link provided below for a better understanding and do not feel discouraged to participate in NaHaiWriMo. It is a great workshop environment where everybody - new and well published poets are able to share the same page and appreciate each other or offer suggestions. It has surely helped me grow. It is a public page and anybody can view the contents if I am not wrong. I am not promoting anything here please. End of the day, it is our own decision to follow what keeps us happy. Thank you for the space, Kristjaan san!
